May 1 Mason Weekly Update

Hello Mason families,

Here are your updates for the coming week.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Our teachers are phenomenal here at Mason, and we want to thank them! Since this is National Teacher Appreciation Week, please take a moment this week to send a quick note to a teacher to let them know how much you appreciate them!

Rainiers tickets and a Mason celebration

Did you know that one of Mason’s own was the Tacoma Rainier’s jersey design contest winner? As a result, 8th Grader Brookelynn Bolechala will be throwing out the first pitch at the Rainier’s game on May 26th, and we’d love to have a bunch of Mustangs there to support her. In fact, our PTSA is helping us fill the stands by selling ticket packages to the game, including a reserved seat, a ballpark meal, and a Tacoma Rainiers hat. If you don’t have your tickets yet, please see the flyer attached to this evening’s email and get yours today! Rainiers Game Flyer

SBA Testing begins this week

All 8th graders will be taking the Science Smarter Balance Assessment beginning on Tuesday in their regularly-scheduled Science classes. We will also start testing our students who need special accommodations for testing on Tuesday. Since there is no Science test for 6th and 7th graders, most of them will begin with the ELA test on May 9th.

Families can help their students have the best possible testing experience by ensuring that students get a good night’s sleep before each test and by sending them to school with their fully-charged laptops, their charging cable, and a pair of corded headphones that will give them access to the listening portion of the test during the assessments.  Please note that students are not allowed to use wireless headphones on the state assessments.  I would also like to remind everyone that students are not allowed to carry personal electronic devices with them during testing, so if they bring a cell phone or a smartwatch into the testing environment, they will be asked to turn them off and leave them in the teacher’s possession during testing.  In addition, backpacks and other bags will be placed away from student desks during testing. Thanks for your assistance in ensuring that we have a secure and distraction-free testing environment.

Safety request

Parents, we are seeing a dramatic increase in the use of the “AirDrop” feature on smartphones when students are sharing photos and videos with each other. The problem is, some students are using this feature to send illicit images or videos to others, and since it occurs via a Bluetooth connection between devices, it can be very difficult to trace where these images came from. Please work with your students to help them understand the danger in accepting images from others when they don’t know or don’t trust the person sending them. It might be wise to just disable the AirDrop feature entirely. Thank you for your help in this area.

Bike Month

May is Bike Month! There are Bike Month activities planned throughout Pierce County during the month of May. At Mason, we’re celebrating with daily sign-ins for bike riders. We’ll keep a tally of how many riders we have each day. Mr. Cook will bring donuts for riders every Tuesday and one Friday we’ll have prize drawings for gift cards and student store merchandise. We already have a great group of riders at Mason. Think about joining in. Be sure to bring a lock, wear a helmet, choose a safe route to school and remember to walk your bike once you get to campus so we can keep everyone safe. Let’s see how much we can lower our carbon footprint this month, Mustangs!

Lost and Found

Our last note this evening is from the Mason office: we have a HUGE number of items in the lost and found right now, including jackets, lunch bags, water bottles and other items. Our lost and found is located in the cafeteria, just to the left of the stage. It is easily accessible from the parent pickup loop, so please let a Mason staff member know if you would like to check it during pickup or dropoff times. Our more valuable items, such as glasses, retainers, and cell phones, are stored in the office, so please contact to office to inquire about those types of items.

Have a great week, and Go Mustangs!

Take Care,
